Faithless - God is a DJ - Textual Analysis

Above is the video for Faithless - God is a DJ, one of Faithless' most famous songs.

Within the first scene Maxi Jazz is depicted under a spotlight and with the context of the vocals this looks like a light has been sent from the heavens and that God is watching over him and all of us, this links into the song nicely making it a very effective looking shot. 

A long shot then shows him walking past some railings, yet the railings seem to be alive with a face made out of them, this is not a commonality obviously therefore, creates the impression that God is watching over and is all seeing and all knowing of what is going on. 

The use of sign language by Maxi Jazz makes the audience really think about the context and meaning of the lyrics and what impact they have on them. it also focuses the audience on the sound and beat of the song and gives them a real feeling of what is going on. 

In one of the scene we see Maxi Jazz shot in a mid-shot however, he is not centered but to the left of the shot, this could connote that there is another presence in the shot they just cant be seen, this could connote that Jesus or God is always there and always with you or I. This shot is repeated  throughout the video, this really signifies to the audience the possibility of something else being present in the scene. 

The director then focuses more on the actual sound of the song which is done by focusing on the keyboard playing and has used a close up shot of the keyboard and the hands playing the song to show the significance of the tune and that this is a main part of the song, this is also heightened by the use of quick jump cuts to increase pace. 

The director then once again tries to enforce meaning by using a group shot of people arguing, this shows that God cant solve everything, yet he is still all seeing and all knowing which is enforced in this scene.

There is then a transfer in the video from Maxi Jazz talking to a scene of enjoyment, this shows the transformation to God becoming a DJ and intensifies the meaning of the song. 

There are large crowd shots within the final few shots enforcing the possibility that God and his ability to be a DJ has brought all of these people together. There is a final fade out from the level of the crowd towards the ceiling this connotes that the sound has come from God in the heavens.
