Questionnaire Analysis

This is the analysis of results received from my Questionnaire and what they mean to me and how they are useful:

1.)   Are you a fan of ‘Drum and Bass’, ‘Electronica’ or ‘Dance’ music? If not what other genre do you prefer?
After analysing the results of question 1 of my audience research questionaire I can conclude that the vast majority of people are open to all types of music, especially Drum and Bass/Dance/Electronica with 10 out of the 14 particapants liking those genres of music. This is good for  me when it comes to producing my video as it means the video will appeal to a relatively large audience and not to a niche market making it easier to produce and more mainstream, however, must be careful to stay within the genre and not sway too much into mainstream genres such as pop and R’n’B.

2.)   Why do you like the genre mentioned in the previous question?
For this question I only analyed the answer that were returned for the three ideal genres mentioned in the previous question, this helped me gain a real perception of what people wanted within this genre. The main repsonse form the analysis is that this type of genre is more than just a song it’s the experiecne and feeling that comes with the song that I need to make sure I encapsualte within my music video.

3.)   Have you heard of Faithless before? Explain why or why not?
This was a rather important question as it allowed me to understand the popularity of the band I was using, this meant the song would also be widely listened to therefore the video I create would need to match up to the reputation of the band and the song. With 11 out of the 14 particapants knowing who the band where and what they had produced, this showed that even with a range of age groups who didn’t grow up with the band the song and the band are still known and listended to showing the my music video must live up to this reputation.

4.)   What is your favourite music video and why?
This was a difficult question to analyse with everyone picking somehting different, however, the answers for why they liked certain videos was similar in the fact that they all liked the feeling the video gave them and that the video should back up the  song.

5.)   What would you normally expect to see from a Dance/Electronic/Drum  and Bass music video?
This was a key question to help me undestand what the people watching the video would normally expect to see and helped me make the decision of whether or not to follow the expectation or go off on a tangent. However, in the results most people where saying the same thing, that the video should contain artificial lighting and effects and extremely fast paced editing, this is so that the editing and the camera follows the pace of the song and makes the audience feel the pace and the tempo.

6.)   What narrative would you expect to see revolved around the lyric ‘I cant get no sleep’?
This question allowed me to understand the expectations of the audience around the main lyric of insomnia ‘I cant get no sleep’ this let me understand some other peoples ideas aswell. The main vibe from the question is hat the character is struggling from the stresses in society which is causing him to lose his sleep. This is a very viable route I could use for my production and would be easy narrative to follow.

7.)   Are you a fan of the song ‘Insomnia’ if so why or why not?
This question was one of the most important ones as it allowed me to gauge, how popular the song was this would ultimatly decide if I was producing the video for a niche market or for the mainstream market. Ultimatly, 10 out of the 14 particapants had heard of the song and all had good comments to make about it, this is good as it means people will be open and willing to watch my video.

8.)   What do you think the typical settings of a Drum and Bass/Electronica/Dance music video would be?
This question allowed me to gain a perception of what the audience are expecting to see from my video and allowed me to gauge some possible ideas as to what setting I could use in order for it to be effective. The most popular answer after my analysis was the setting of a nightclub, as people felt the song would meet the atmosphere expected from a nightclub style setting.

9.)   Do you feel like the video should be shot in daylight or at night, giving it is based on the ideology of not being able to get any sleep?
This question allowed me to gain a sense of when the main proportion of the video should be filmed, and due to the narrative  of the song being he cant get any sleep this is a question that couldn’t go unasked. After looking at the results the popularity was that the production should be filmed mainly at night, with the audience saying this would show his lack of sleep which is a definte must for my production.

10.) Would you prefer to see a full 8 minute video or a edited version smaller version such as 5 minutes?
This question allowed me to understand the dedication of the fans, to either willing to watch the whole 8 mins or have a smaller version, however, the majority of the audiecne members requested that a smaller version was produced as 8 minutes would be way too long, however, this makes it a lot easier for me aswell as it means I don’t have to produce 8 mins of footage.

11.) Do you feel a large crowd or one character would suit the genre and sound of the song/music video? And why?
After analysing the results for this question I discovered that the people who have heard the song before suggested that a solitary person to begin with that built up into a crowd would suit the song and that a large group would suit the genre. However, I have decided a single character with the occasional large crowd would be better for me logistial and therefore easier to produce.

12.) What characters would you expect to see within the drum and bass/Electronica/Dance genre?
This question allowed me to understand the audiences perception of what characters they would expect to see within the production, and the main consensus was that of young people, early 20’s and more commonly a male, they said this style of character suits the song especially with the male vocals already in the song.

13.) Do you feel the main tune of the song should come in early or after a long build up?
This question was asked to gain an audience perception of if I edited the song, when should the main drop of song come in as for Insomnia this is the main section of the song. Most people preferred the song to have a long build saying that they need time to get into the feel of the song and to appreciate the drop at the end. This show that this choice would be better.

14.) Would you prefer the music video to follow the narrative of the song or go off on a tangent?
This question helped me to decide the course of my music video, as some videos stray way of the narrative of the song and don’t work, yet others that do that can be quite effective however, my audience prefferred to see the song follow the narrative created by the lyrics. Therefore, this is what I shall do.

This analysis is vitally important for me as it allows me to understand what the audience for my production are expecting and what they would like to see. This will impact my production massively and help me make my decisions as to what the audience want to see.
