Idea 1 - Close Up
- Framing of Shot: The framing of the shot is a difficult decision with me having the choice of shooting front on, meaning more facial expression will be gained but less background will be present, where as, if it was from the side then the facial expression would be more minimal but the connotations and setting of the background would be stronger.
- Effect Gained/Narrative: The close up look will allow me to show the tiredness on Conor's face due to his lack of sleep, this would however, mean that the photo of Conor would have to be front facing in order to see his facial expression this would result in the background being less prominent meaning meaning that could be gained from the background will be lost.
- Benefits:
- Will show Conor's facial expression much more clearly than a shot at a further distance.
- Easier to shoot, wouldn't require a large amount of organizing, set up and props.
- Logistically easy, Permission to film would be easy to achieve, and in terms of time on set this would be a lot less.
- Drawbacks:
- Limits the amount of setting or background that can be fitted into the shot.
- May not be as technically challenging and therefore, less mark may be achieved.
- Meaning may be restricted due to less content in the total shot.
- Real Life Example:
Idea 2 - Mattress in Middle of Nowhere
- Framing of Shot: This will be shot from above in order to give the impression that Conor is lonely and struggling. The mattress will not be square against the camera this is to show Conor's lifestyle is out of line with society and his friends. Another possibility is to have the mattress in a different location to show the different social setting that Conor is experiencing.
- Effect Gained: The distance of the shot can show the loneliness Conor feels from his friends and family due to the pressure he is feeling from his studies. The mattress in the middle of nowhere can show his willingness to to sleep anywhere to gain sleep that he is so deprived of. The camera will be placed above, this can give and impression that something else is looking over him from above, stopping him from sleeping, e.g. god or the devil.
- Benefits:
- Technically more challenging to set up shoot and edit, therefore, this could get me more marks due to the extended level of technical difficult.
- More meaning can be drawn from the set up of the shot allowing me to reach further into the audience and make them think more in depth about the meaning of the album cover.
- Greater amount of skill and ability required to pull off, gaining more marks.
- Drawbacks; The set up will take quite a while and lot of organisation and planning, with permission to gain certain locations being more, this could also raise quite a logistical problem.
- Gaining props, especially the mattress will be difficult to get hold of without having to pay for a new mattress, and once achieved, transporting the mattress will be difficult.
- Shooting from a height can be a challenge as I would need to use a crane or tall ladder to achieve a decent height .
Real Life Example:
This is a similar style shot as the one I would be trying to achieve except the mattress will be in place of the boat, this can convey that there is a distance that the public feel from Conor due to the height of the shot and the isolated location.
Idea 3 - Half & Half
- Framing of Shot: This will be a Mid-shot or close up of Conor, however this will require me to shot in two locations with the same distance height and similar lighting to give the impression that Conor has two sides to his life, caused by his lack of sleep. Although, I will also leave enough background space in order to add elements into the background to evoke even more meaning.
- Effect Gained: This will allow me to get a good effect across to the audience of Conor having two sides to his life, Work and Play. This will show the contrast between him having to work hard while still trying to balance his social life, I can also add things to the background to show Conor's life more clearly and evoke more meaning from the photograph.
- Benefits:
- This shot will be technically challenging to do in the editing stage as it will require me to join to different photos together in order to make 1 photo of the same image with only a few things changed.
- The meaning that would be portrayed to the audience would be clear and simple to grasp allowing me to get the message of Conor having a split life between his school work and his social life.
- In terms of shooting this shot it would be relatively simple as I all that would be required would be two different locations with two different costumes shot at the same distance and height and merge them together to show he has two lives.
- Drawbacks:
- Editing will be technically difficult as it will involve taking two photos of the same image and combining them to make them look as if they were one.
- Taking the photo at the same height distance and lighting with Conor doing the same facial expression will take some time to get right and figure out the best way to maintain consistency.
- Real Life Example:
This is the perfect example of the effect I am trying to achieve with my shot, as the image shows the central character has two sides to his life split down the middle, the only difference would be that Conor would be wearing different costumes in the two halves to enhance the effect even further.
